FREEDOM OF THE PRESS
AMS INTERNAL NEWSLETTER
Daren’s Journal
Welcome to the spring edition of the AMS newsletter! As Al mentioned in the fall edition, Jeff and Erik have graciously offered the AMS leadership team the opportunity to introduce an AMS newsletter. I couldn’t be more excited than to be in the spring newsletter; it’s my favorite season. Spring seems to be filled with excitement – getting back outside, flowers blooming, spring breaks (who doesn’t love spring break?) and graduations. During spring 25 years ago, I joined Raymond James, and it’s been quite a journey.
That journey began with an internship in the Human Resources department. After a year interning, I accepted a full-time position as assistant vice president, selection, a role in which I administered the testing program for all internal and external job candidates across the firm. It was a great way to learn about the company and meet so many people.
My first six months at Raymond James were busy personally as well. I had my second child, Blaire Elizabeth, five months after I started, and received my doctorate in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from USF four short weeks later. Can you believe we only got six weeks of maternity leave back then? Raymond James has come a long way for associates!
After several years in HR and many accomplishments, I had the opportunity to join AMS in January 2005 with the mission to build an investment management training program for advisors, now known as the Institute of Investment Management Consulting (IIMC). To learn more about how the Advisory Consulting team I led evolved and what we are up to now, you’ll have to register for my AMS Explorer session on May 24.
The AMS Explorer series is an excellent example of spring renewal and growth. It is wonderful to see this program return. It offers all associates – new and tenured – the chance not only to learn about our great department’s functional areas, but also to meet many of our colleagues. I have signed up for several sessions, as have those on my team. I hope you will take this opportunity to develop your knowledge and network. Whether you sign up for AMS Explorer or not, I challenge you to set some goals for yourself this spring to take advantage of the many educational resources the firm has to offer. You have an open invitation to set up some time with me to chat about your aspirations!
Raymond James culture is often defined as “a family.” As with Al, my spouse works here; Dean is in AMS Sales. Dean and I met at work, and our wedding was practically a firm event: Our maid of honor works here, we were married by an RJFS advisor, and our photographer was an RJFS advisor. Dean and I have four children. Tate, our only son, is 26 and a land surveyor who roams the country building solar farms. Our oldest daughter, Blaire, graduated from Louisiana State University last May (Geaux Tigers!) and remained in Louisiana with the rest of my family. Our youngest are 17-year-old twins, Alexandra and Evann, who are finishing their junior year and have no idea where they will land in college – very exciting times.
I hope you enjoy the rest of the AMS Spring newsletter and that I have the chance to meet you either through the AMS Explorer program or at another AMS event.
Happy Spring!

- Tell me about your role in the department – what is a typical day like for you?

- What do you like to do away from work – hobbies or activities?
- Long walks on the beach … just kidding. Endless karaoke concerts in the car, in-depth conversations with ChatGPT, walking trails and working out, video games, escape rooms, finding the best restaurants in Tampa/St. Pete. - If you could instantly acquire one talent or ability, what would it be and why?
- Have incredibly precise time control. If I could control time, I could literally solve nearly all the world’s problems. Money? You got it. Pull a Biff from "Back to the Future” and bet on sports or invest in stocks you know are going to succeed. Knowledge? Learn a skill and reverse time so you know the skill at a younger age. Need to save the world from an asteroid? You got it, reverse time and shoot the asteroid with a giant laser you built with all your winnings from sports betting to deflect it off its collision course with the planet. The possibilities are endless.
Linda Schaefer – Projects
- Tell us a little about yourself
- My career background prior to joining Raymond James was in wireless telecommunications/technology. The company, headquartered in Tampa, provides technology and services for wireless telecommunications providers and other players in over 200 countries. So I have a lot to learn about the financial industry!
- I grew up in Jupiter, Florida, when it was a very small town and air conditioning was not in most homes and not the schools! It was a beautiful area, and our family spent much of our childhood waterlogged and at the beach every weekend. I had three siblings, one special needs sister and another sister and brother. We loved the water, and all learned to swim at a very early age. My father did move our family to a small town in Georgia when I was in high school, and I attended a small two-year college in Gainesville, Georgia, then spent a half of a year at the University of Georgia. I moved back to Jupiter (the rest of the family moved back to Florida as well), and then attended the University of Florida, where I met my first husband (he passed away in 2012) and we moved to the Tampa area, where he grew up.
- Tell me about your role in the department – what is a typical day like for you?
- I started last September with the inaugural 12-week, ReInvest Program. I had been out of the workforce for almost six years to care for my elderly mom who had dementia. The program is a wonderful way to re-enter the workforce, and the Raymond James program was well thought out and a success. I started a permanent position in the AMS department, working on Anupam Singh’s team in mid-January. The department is exciting and the team members across the department have been supportive and gone out of their way to help me learn the business, company and teams (and team members).
- What do you like to do away from work – hobbies or activities?
- I am an avid, lifelong reader—of almost all genres of literature. I’m also a lover of the theatre and certainly missed The Straz and Ruth Eckerd during the pandemic. But more importantly, I’m a huge animal lover, and all my animals over my lifetime have been rescues. Sean and I have four inside cats and we’re fostering a neighbor’s outdoor Maine Coon cat (she won’t come inside) while he’s traveling for two years. It also seems as if a feral kitty has adopted us! We are planning to capture him, using a humane trap, to ensure he’s neutered and vaccinated. I am a strong believer in the TNVR programs that exist in this country.
- What or who has influenced your life the most?
- I would have to say my parents and my special needs sister who passed away seven years ago. She was the first born, in 1956, and the doctors knew something was wrong, but not what, at birth. At the time, the practice was to institutionalize babies who were not “normal.” My parents would not consider that, and their progressive, very wonderful doctor told them to take her home and love her – which they did! Wendy was both physically and intellectually impaired and was missing the connection of nerves that connect the two hemispheres of the brain, the corpus callosum. It’s the same impairment that Kim Peek (the real Rain Man) had, and he was a savant. In her own way Wendy was a savant—but that’s a story for another time. Our parents ensured that Wendy always had the best education and opportunities available. They worked with the ARC and the Special Olympics (as did I and my siblings) our entire young lives. I think their commitment to her, and to others with special needs, and their constant support of each of their children provided each of us with a foundation of positive values and the ability to easily work with people who are different than ourselves. It’s such a fundamental, important value, and I see that in the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs at Raymond James. I’m happy to have been asked to join the company and look forward to more years of service here.
- How big is your family?
- I have four nephews who I can no longer call kids since the oldest is 30 and the youngest is 26! And my oldest nephew made me a great Aunt to a beautiful daughter, Peyton, a year ago. Astonishingly, I was married in December of last year to Sean. It’s a great story: Our moms met each other and were lifetime friends since the early 1960s. Our families were very close, and Sean is my mom’s best friend’s oldest son, whom I’ve known my entire life. He stayed in the Jupiter area, and I’ve been in the Tampa area for our adult lives. We hadn’t spoken in years, but our families were always in touch, even after his mom passed away. We started talking after my mom passed away in late 2021. He was single for about the same amount of time I had been widowed and he was caring for his father who has dementia. We shocked ourselves and then our families when we realized we belonged together for the rest of our lives. Sean has two children, the same age range as my nephews. His daughter blessed him with a beautiful granddaughter, Charlotte, on November 1 of last year.
- What’s your favorite season and why?
- My favorite season is fall, and my favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. It’s such a warm and comforting time of year. My fall decorations come out September 1 and stay until after Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving has always been a big event among our immediate family, extended family and friends who join us. It’s great to get together and enjoy one another and eat traditional Thanksgiving foods we’ve had our entire lives. Of course, I ignore football – unlike everyone else in the family. As for college football, The Gators are it! Pro football is split between the Dolphins and The Bucs in the family.
- What was your favorite job?
- My favorite job is really two jobs, but they have a relationship with one another. I love working as a product manager (very much like what I’m doing in the AMS department). This affords me the ability to work with a diverse set of people from multiple departments and help drive new applications, enhancements, and processes to improve the business and enhance the end client experience. Being part of a team is rewarding because we are all working towards a common goal, and we all learn from our individual backgrounds and knowledge set. The other area that I love is leading a team of people and helping mentor them and grow in their careers.
- What TV show are you currently binging?
- The only thing I binge regularly is “Jeopardy!” We are still doing mini binges of “Grey’s Anatomy” (It keeps us up way too late), but try out different movies each weekend.
- If you could instantly acquire one talent or ability, what would it be and why?
- It would be to have any musical ability! Both of my husbands have music in common, and one of my nephews was a music major and can play just about any instrument put in front of him. And he learned most on his own! I have very eclectic musical tastes and enjoy listening to heartfelt music of all kinds.

- What or who has influenced your life the most?
- My granddad played a huge role in my life. He was not only a father figure to me, but he helped me develop a love for traveling and a love for the local church and community.
- How big is your family?
- I have a large family: two brothers and one sister. I am the youngest.
- What’s your favorite season and why?
- I am a big fan of the fall and winter. The summer in Memphis is no joke, and the pollen in the spring here is undefeated against my allergies.
- What was your favorite job?
- For the past few years, I have been working nights and weekends with the Memphis Grizzlies as a basketball operations assistant. It’s been a fun ride!
- What TV show are you currently binging?
- I have a few different things that have been on the docket. I can’t really get too far away from “The Office,” since it’s my comfort show. I’ve been slowly making it through “The Crown,” and my girlfriend and I just finished season four of “Love is Blind.”
- Favorite Podcast?
- Outside of sports and the plethora of podcasts I listen to about that, I’m also a true crime fan so I listen to “Crime Junkie” every now and then!
- Favorite sports team?
- Since I’m from the Memphis area, the Grizzlies hold a special place in my heart, but I’m also a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Giants.

Pet Corner
Banks
Owner: Megan Lisenbee
My name is Banks and I’m a mix of German Shepherd and Husky. I’m about two years old, and was a stray. I’m the biggest, goofiest, most affectionate fluffball you’ll ever meet. Some even like to call me a good boy. I have lots of energy and love to spend my days running around the dog park making new friends, or going on long walks with Mom. I’ve gotten pretty famous, and people are starting to recognize me. I’m so happy to be in such a loving family.
Cocoa
Owner: Angie Stevens
Meet Cocoa my grand-dog, and Malik my grandson. Cocoa is a female English Bulldog. She is extremely playful and a good companion for my grandson. Obviously, they had spotted a squirrel in the backyard
Cookie
Owner: Yulia DeArmond
Cookie is a 10-year-old female Maltese. She is the most loyal dog and will trick anyone to give her treats.
Evie
Owner: Linda Schaefer
Evie is a small, sweet little Hemingway with extra toes on her front feet. She loves to play with Oliver, and she has a curled tail. She is dainty and adorable but can be ferocious playing with Oliver. She’s about four years old. Sometimes she pulls this sweet pitiful look because she doesn’t want to jump on the counter, and we must pick her up and put her there to eat.
Oliver and Prince Harry
Prince Harry is the orange and white kitty and he’s a Hemingway with extra toes on the front and back of his feet. Prince is like Oliver’s protector and Oliver adores it! He was born on my sister’s property in the country where everyone drops unwanted animals. My sister was trying to capture mama kitty and kittens, but the mama disappeared when the kittens were four weeks old, so they took in the five babies and bottle fed and weaned them, and their old dog became the mommy surrogate. Oliver is the funniest cat I’ve ever had. He gets into everything and his favorite thing to do is to shred paper! Any kind of paper – but he’s particular about the color.
Lucy
Owner: Patrick Thompson
Lucy is the newest addition to the Thompson family. She is a four-month-old Brittany and a very sweet girl. She loves playing fetch and spending time with the kids.
Sir Hank Norman
Owner: Michael Paz
Sir Hank Norman is a Boxer mix and he’s ready to celebrate his 8th birthday May 17th! He enjoys short walks, sneaking onto his fathers’ bed when no one is looking, and cuddling with his grandparents. He’s not all relaxation though. When his dads are working from home, he can be found by the front window guarding them from all dangers, like the Amazon guy, the neighbor’s dog, or even a bird! He’s a goofball with an innate ability to make everyone love him. Also, he's hoping for a little brother or sister soon! Paws crossed!
Tytan
Owner: LaTisha Ivory
Tytan is our 2-year-old Maltichon. She joined our family for emotional support to my daughter after she lost her father. She is full of energy, loves to play, and is our personal security system because she barks at everything. We love her to pieces.
Wyatt
Owner: Kayla Smith
This is my best new buddy Wyatt, named because, well, he is in fact the color white. He also goes by Wyatt Earp. GO RAYS!
Model Citizens
5k for a cause
Our very own Sue Kuczynski runs 5ks for a Cause: veteran-related, mental health, housing, the Heart Walk and melanoma research just to name a few. In March she did “62 miles for St. Jude’s” – she actually did 82 miles, but raised her goal of $250.
The picture below is from the 5k by the Bay. The Gramatica Foundation builds a house for a veteran every year, and this is one of the many fundraisers that support that effort.
If anyone has a cause that they would like to do a 5k for, let Sue know and she will go with and meet you at the finish. “I am slow and steady, but I do finish,” she says.

Tom Thornton's Top 5
Springtime’s hot questions about artificial intelligence and ChatGPT
- Is artificial intelligence (AI) new? No, it has been around a long time, and computers have been evolving with AI for years. Now we have facial recognition, Roombas, “chatbots”, Alexa, Siri, grammar suggestions in Word, Google Maps, Waze, Netflix/YouTube “related content you may enjoy,” Spotify, spam filters, fraud detection, some self-driving cars, etc. The McKinsey Global Institute predicts that approximately 70% of businesses will be using at least one type of AI technology by 2030, Gartner says 37% of organizations have implemented AI in some form, and according to Servion, by 2025, 95% of customer interactions will be powered by AI.
- When did AI start? In the early 1950’s, the Logic Theorist (Newell, Shaw, Simon) was a program designed to mimic the problem-solving skills of a human and was funded by Research and Development (RAND) Corp. It is considered by many to be the first artificial intelligence program, and was presented and named AI at the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence hosted by John McCarthy and Marvin Minsky in 1956. Just over 40 years later, on May 11, 1997, an IBM computer called Deep Blue used AI to beat the world chess champion in a six-game match: two wins for IBM, one for the champion and three draws. In 2011, IBM’s Watson AI system won Jeopardy! against two human opponents.
- Any other good examples of AI being used? AI applications are used in healthcare to build sophisticated machines that can detect diseases and identify cancer cells. A group at Mount Sinai used deep-learning-based AI algorithms to predict the development of diseases with 94% accuracy, including cancers of liver, rectum, and prostate. For farmers and to help world hunger, AI is used to identify defects and nutrient deficiencies in the soil. Using computer vision, robotics, and machine learning applications, AI can analyze where weeds are growing. AI bots can help to harvest crops at a higher volume and faster pace than human laborers. AI is also used to help people with disabilities overcome them. There are mobile apps that help deaf children learn to read by translating the text into sign language, and even apps that translate emotion into short and simple sounds to help blind people “see” the emotion of the person they are talking with. The app uses the rear camera on the phone to evaluate the nose, mouth, eyebrows and eyes, and artificial intelligence to analyze those facial features and identify the emotion they convey – contempt, anger, fear, disgust, sadness, happiness or surprise.
- What is ChatGPT? ChatGPT stands for "Chat-based Generative Pre-trained Transformer," from the firm OpenAI, and is a powerful large language model “chatbot” which responds to you in a human-like manner. It is based on GPT-3, which has been trained on hundreds of billions of words from the internet. There are others in this growing area like Google Bardand Microsoft's AI-powered Bing. The rise in ChatGPT's popularity can largely be attributed to the expert combination of wide accessibility, knowledge, and fluidity in conversations, which it does a bit better now than Bard, Bing, Amazon Lex, IBM’s Watson assistant and FaceBook Blender. Examples to type in to ChatGPT for an “answer” would include:
- Explain quantum physics.
- Write a poem about a headache in the style of Walt Whitman.
- Write a country song about a dog named Jagger who loves to run.
- Summarize the book “Pride and Prejudice” for me.
- Write a sick note for my child missing school.
- Write/finish this computer code.
- Will ChatGPT take our jobs? I would say No, not for most of us anytime soon. But history tells us that things definitely change over time: Cartographers (map artists) had an important job until GPS got popular, at bowling alleys back in the day the pinsetters were important, and so were lamplighters in the streets before electricity and batteries. Also the milkman was popular, as were telephone operators. Other workers who needed to move on included many travel agents, most stereo/TV repairers and all encyclopedia salesmen. This AI stuff will keep moving. ChatGPT can now can write computer programs, articles, and emails, and even act like a human customer support representative. However, AI has a hard time telling facts from fiction; it’s mainly incredibly good at predicting the sequence of words that should come next to create responses that make sense. Any legal info, mission-critical software, or decisions needing a human mind or response would be safer with people responding, for now at least.

What was your favorite summer break memory as a child growing up?
Every summer I always looked forward to spending time outdoors with my brother and sister! Since we were all on break from school we would spend the days playing in the pool, going to the beach, and taking trips to Busch Gardens. – Janelle Kramer, DVP Recon (St. Pete)
My favorite summer break memories growing up usually involved going to the beach and playing pickup sports like whiffleball and manhunt with the kids in my neighborhood. – Hunter Quinn, Advisory Consulting (St. Pete)
Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri. All-day jet ski rental and showing no mechanical sympathy. – Max Saladino, FA Discretionary Trading Support (St. Pete)
Playing diddle babble, wiffle ball and kick the can at the Beach Club. – Matt Todd, Sales (St. Pete)
Would you rather relax by the pool or relax on the beach?
Pool! I don’t like sand. It’s coarse, and rough and irritating, and it gets everywhere. – Austin Hunt, Sales (St. Pete)
I’d rather be at the beach 10 times out of 10! – Hunter Quinn, Advisory Consulting (St. Pete)
Definitely the pool – haha, I loved the beach as a kid, but I am not a fan of sand. – Janelle Kramer, DVP Recon (St. Pete)
The beach, so long as I’m not hungry. – Max Saladino, FA Discretionary Trading Support (St. Pete)
Do you have any summer vacation plans this year? If so, what are they?
F1 Race in London – Matt Todd, Sales (St. Pete)

There are a few plans I’m really looking forward to this summer, the first of which is seeing Dead & Co.’s final tour at Fenway Park with my brothers and friends. – Hunter Quinn, Advisory Consulting (St. Pete)
What is the #1 trait that you love most about yourself?
I am just happy to be here. That’s my attitude in every situation. I’ve had some pretty great experiences in my life that came about by just being open to them. – Kevin Beckett, UMA Trading (St. Pete)
My ability to listen and care for others. – Nicolas Louis, Advisor Services (St. Pete)
I love my ability to be able to start engaging conversations with those around me. – Abbey Carignan, Billing (St. Pete)
What was the worst gift you've ever received?
A knitted beanie that looked like scraggly hair and came with a matching face cover to look like a beard. – Russ Tyson, Trading Admin (St.Pete)
One time I received this sweater from this nice older lady, I think it was for Christmas. It was hideous. That’s before I appreciated ugly sweaters. I was like 8 to 10 years old, I had to pretend that I liked it so as to not hurt her feelings, but I feel like my face said it all. – Nicolas Louis, Advisor Services (St. Pete)
A waffle maker that makes Lego brick-shaped waffles. It was a nice thought, but I never make waffles and don’t really have space for it. – Forrest Field, Advisory Consulting (St. Pete)
If you're comfortable sharing, tell us about your first kiss?
A formal school dance with “Stairway to Heaven” playing over the speaker system. – Abbey Carignan, Billing (St. Pete)
My first kiss was on a car ride home from marching band practice in 9th grade. I played the clarinet, he played the drums. It was a very cute moment in my life. – Kevin Beckett, UMA Trading (St. Pete)
We were eating Chinese takeout and then put on a movie, where I leaned in for the kiss. I was very concerned about soy sauce breath, but I guess it worked out as we are now married! – Forrest Field, Advisory Consulting (St. Pete)
HA! Awkward because it was a good night kiss so my friends were telling us get a room or hurry up. They were just jealous. Haters gonna hate. – Russ Tyson, Trading Admin (St.Pete)
What is your favorite romantic movie?
“The Great Gatsby.” – Valerie Chilcott-Gulla, Freedom Trading (St. Pete)
“While You Were Sleeping” is probably my favorite from the ‘90s romance boom. Recently, the series “Heartstopper” on Netflix hit my heart hard. I recommend it if you want just a simple, sweet LGBTQ+ narrative. – Kevin Beckett, UMA Trading (St. Pete)
“Shrek.” – Russ Tyson, Trading Admin (St.Pete)
DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION
“Inclusion is not bringing people into what already exists; it is making a new space, a better space for everyone.”
–George Dei, Professor at University of Toronto
Celebrating differences with Derron Ragland
Derron joined AMS in October 2022 as the supervisor of advisor services. He attended college at Fisk University, where he played basketball. He serves as a deacon and teaches the youth at his church. His career is varied, and includes experience in construction, distribution, and now financial services.
He was born and raised in Millington, Tennessee, a suburb of Memphis. Derron’s wife, Victoria, is the regional DEI advisor to Pinnacle Bank. They have three boys, Micah (8), Jacob (13) and Braylen (18), who is the quarterback for Georgia State University in Atlanta. While he was in college, Derron raised his younger brother after his mom passed away.
For Derron, “DEI means creating an atmosphere that invites individuals to put their best foot forward because people no longer have to put a mask on just to be accepted or included. I love seeing smiling faces and genuine happiness in individuals. So when we talk about culture in any aspect, it means to me that people are the first priority. There are too many stories of people sitting in the parking lot of a job dreading to come into the building, so when we put an effort to truly be inclusive, it changes the perspective or their reality and now they find a level of peace and joy with the people they have to be around majority of the day. Productivity goes up, expectations increase, engagement is multiplied, and now the culture becomes a tradition.”
Derron believes that taking chances and being vulnerable is when things start to change, not only in his life, but in the lives of his family. He is “built by failure,” since taking chances turned negatives into opportunities.
